About Health Life Fitness

Who we are, what we do and why we do it.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, get fitter, be healthier, age well or just look and feel better, Health Life Fitness can help you achieve your goals.

Who runs Health Life Fitness?

Health Life Fitness (HLF) has been created and developed by Ian Preston (yes, that dodgy looking bloke in the picture is me!) to support people to help them reach their health, lifestyle, fitness and weight loss goals.

I have over 30 years of work and experience within the NHS and health and fitness sector.

As well as running HLF, I also work for the NHS in a primary care setting supporting people to make lifestyle changes to help them improve their overall health and wellbeing. This often involves me working with GPs, nurses and other clinicians to support patients around lifestyle changes such as weight management, being fitter or managing a long term condition such as pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes.

I am a qualified and experienced personal trainer and fitness instructor with additional qualifications in Level 3 Exercise Referral, Level 4 Obesity and Diabetes Certificate and am a ISSA Certified Nutritionist and Functional Ageing Specialist.

What we do

HLF aims to provide a range of friendly, community based activities and programmes that aim to work alongside other health and fitness related organisations such as GP surgeries, physiotherapists and lifestyle related services.

As we are largely based in a community setting, we also aim to engage with local groups and organisations to help local residents improve their overall health, wellbeing and fitness.

Our current and planned activities and programmes include:

  • Functional strength, balance and fitness classes for older adults
  • Exercise and lifestyle focused classes aimed for those with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes to help improve or manage their condition
  • Weight management programmes that incorporate nutritional advice, lifestyle changes and exercise classes
  • Informational talks around topics such as weight management, healthy aging, physical activity and nutrition

Why we do it

While there are a lot of good exercise classes, weight management programmes and health and lifestyle services available, these may not be for everyone.

For example, most weight loss programmes don’t deliver any exercise sessions within their programmes. They also may not provide information about key weight loss principles such as energy balance, calorie deficit, macronutrients and mindset to help you have more control over your lifestyle choices.

When it comes to diabetes, there is little in the way locally of bespoke exercise classes aimed for people with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Physical activity and exercise in diabetes can improve blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes, reduces cardiovascular risk factors, contributes to weight loss, help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes development and improve insulin sensitivity.

So, whether it’s getting fitter, staying functional in older age or losing weight, HLF aims to provide a friendly environment to help give you the support, knowledge and skills to make better informed choices and achieve your lifestyle goals (along with some fun and banter on the way).
